Bullying Lesson Plan/Worksheets

We can start by teaching what is a bully, types of cullying, and the effects of bullying.  Here are some general ways that you can teach you child to be more bully-proof:

  • Demonstrate assertive behavior to offset the effects of bullying. Teach children to ask for things directly and respond directly to each other. It is OK to say "no" to all types of bullying an unacceptable demands. Let children role-play with puppets or dolls.  What is a bully and how does assertive behavior counter them.  This can also lessen the effects of bullying.
  • Teach social skills. Suggest ways for children to compromise or to express their feelings in a positive way. To counter the effects of bullying.  Show children how to resolve problems firmly and fairly.  Talk about the types of bullying and how to handle them.
  • Identify potential friendship problems, the effects of bullying and correct them. Teach children how to ignore routine teasing. Not all provocative behavior must be acknowledged. Teach children the value of making new friends.  Teach them that their are different types of bullying.  The effects of bullying does not have to get to them.
  • Teach common courtesy skills. Teach children to ask nicely and to respond appropriately to polite requests.  This alone can prevent many types of bullying.
  • Identify ways to respond to bullies and the effects of bullying. Help children identify acts of aggression, bossiness or discrimination. Encourage children not to give up objects or territory to bullies. This discourages bullying behavior.  Identify what is a bully with different types of bullying.
  • Demonstrate the rewards of personal achievement. Teach children to trust and value their own feelings. They will be more likely to resist peer pressure, the effects of bullyin, respect warm and caring adults, and be successful in achieving their personal goals.  They will be more resistant to the effects of bullying.

Another basic tool is to begin to teach a child about bullying and the effects of bullying. Remind your child of a recent inappropriate behavior they displayed recently. Remind them what is a bully.  Start by teaching them that anyone can bully and the types of bullying that occurs.  You can ask them:

  • Did your actions or words hurt someone physically or make then afraid?  What were the effect of bullying?  What types of bullying was it?
  • Did it hurt their feelings?  What were the unseen effects of bullying?
  • Did you mean to hurt that person with types of bullying?  Was it an intentional type of bullying?
  • How would you feel if someone did this to you?  What would the effects of bullying be on you?
  • Why are you doing this? Angry? Want my way?  What types of bullying are you displaying?  What is a bully being mean?

You can then move up to teaching them about the ways children get bullied, what is a bully, the types fo bullying, the effects of bullying and what they should do about it. Use these to discuss the types of bullying:

  • Have you seen anybody at school harassed, hurt, or bullied at school?  What types of bullying was it?
  • Tell me about what happened?  Did yo see any effects of bullying on the victim?
  • Should these types of bullying be allowed or even tolerated?  Should any types of bullying be allowed or tolerated?  What is a buuly allowed to exist?
  • What are some actions that the victim can take?  What can the victim do to reduce the effects of bullying?
  • What would you do?  What effects of bullying would you see?

Finally you can move to the highest level by teaching them to handle the crisis as the bystander by beginning a discussion:

  • Have you ever been with a friend while the were being bullied?  What is a bully doing?
  • How do you think they felt?  What effects of bullying persisted?
  • How did you feel about these types of bullying?
  • What did they do?  What effects of bullying were seen?
  • Could they have chosen a better action to these types of bullying?
  • What are some things you could have done to help the situation and the effects of bullying afterwards?

This is just the beginning. Identifying the types of bullying and knowing the effects of bullying.  The next phase is to begin roleplaying.   What is a bully?  Children learn best by “doing”.
