My name is Sam Larioza and I was a victim of bullying as a child. I, like many young children, started dealing with bullying at a much too early age.  I wish I knew how to stop bullying back then!  But I had no clue of how to stop bullying!

I was a little different then most of the other kids. Being a first generation Filipino-American I can still vividly remember being teased and harassed along with my fellow minority classmates in Southern California. I thought that dealing with bullying was just a  part of school life.  That dealing with bullying was just "boys being boys".  That dealing with bullying was just part of growing up. That dealing with bullying was just accepted.

Of the many “minor” incidents one in particular is still etched in my memory today. I was eating my lunch in the cafeteria and just because I was eating something “Asian” I was tormented for what seemed like hours. (I could not move, I could not say anything, I felt so stupid, I did not know how to stop the bullying, I just wanted to hide, I felt so helpless . . . . . and most of all I felt so guilty that I did not do anything! )

I was definately lucker than most. I would consider the bullying I experienced as "minor" compared to the endless cruel tormenting I saw done to others. Yet even with this relatively mild bullying I can now see the effect it had on my self esteem and my personality. I can now understand why I became a shy child and tended to hide from my identity, heritage, and culture. When it came to dealing with bullying  I, like many, did not tell my parents. (Parents almost never know until it is so severe their kids do not want to go to school). 

I feel fortunate not to have my self-esteem and self-image damaged as severely as many bullying victims that are dealing with bullying everyday.
